The Fourth of July used to mean BBQ, picnic blankets, fireworks, festive desserts and lots of family activities.
Holidays away from family and friends have been the hardest thing to adjust to after our move. I’ve always been a big fan and celebrator of holidays, and since having children it’s only gotten more fun. It’s a lot different without anyone else to celebrate with, but it’s still entertaining and the kids love getting dressed up.
So even though we didn’t have anywhere to go, or anything really to do to celebrate July Fourth, we still got decked out. We headed down to the plaza area where we live and enjoyed a takeout pizza and lots of running and playing (they did the running, I did the sitting and a cold glass of chardonnay).
We were able to watch the Macy’s Fourth of July show on the Hudson from our couch, which was both very cool and surreal. We happen to live on the East River and it was too late to bring the kids across town to watch the fireworks up close and personal last night. Fortunately this island is small enough that we could still see the show beyond the buildings.

Poor quality iPhone pix, the best I could do
It was a little different that what we are used to, but it was still fun and there’s nothing wrong with starting new traditions.
I hope you all had a fabulous holiday, my Canadian friends as well!

Happy 4th to you!
Sounds like a sweet way to celebrate.
wonderful! you have such a wonderful, positive attitude- love it!
Are you kidding?! The pictures are fantastic! Let me tell you I went ONCE when they did them on the East River. Waited in the sun for hours. The show was great but it took almost an hour to get off the FDR, then we walked from the NYU Medical center in thr 30s to 57th st where my car was parked. Once was enough…not again until I have kids
