Like many families, we don’t get to go on many real vacations. Mostly because Justin is in dental school, and all of the factors surrounding that make it virtually impossible. We do, however, get to go “home” to California at least once a year, and that is vacation enough for us. I’ve caught myself daydreaming on a couple of occasions about taking the kids to Hawaii some day. When it gets super cold, windy and blustery outside, it’s easy to get lost in those daydreams. We’ve taken the kids to Tahoe and to a beach house a couple of times and that was lovely.

It would be especially wonderful if we could take the kids to the black sand beaches of Maui and revisit Justin’s old stomping grounds in Oahu where he went to college. I think we would all benefit from the solitude, warm weather, peacefulness, and the bonding of just the four of us. That kind of time is very rare around our place. I long to see the stress and intensity of city life dissipate in the eyes of my husband. I want to see my children’s toes in the warm sand and hear their infectious giggles. I want to feel the sun on my skin and taste the salty air. I miss that feeling of freedom.

I cannot wait to celebrate the end of dental school and the beginning of our new life by taking our first real family vacation, complete with umbrella drinks and suntans. A girl can dream.
