NYC Scooter Cruisin’ (plus a giveaway)

Moving to the middle of Manhattan has changed so many things about our lives; Most significantly our mode of transportation. We had to quickly adjust to learning the subway system and bus schedules, rather than depending on the ease of owning our own vehicle. The first two years we were here, we relied mainly on strollers-and I really ran the gamut on finding the perfect one. I had two small children that I needed to get quickly and safely to school, doctors appointments, grocery shopping and the playground.

Jack is four and a half years old now, and not only isn’t interested in riding in a stroller any longer, but he really is too big for one as well. Zoe sees her brother out of the stroller and decides that she doesn’t want to be confined to one either, so just like that, our lives changed again. We’ve sold our larger double strollers and pared down to two singles… that is, until December when baby number three comes along and everything changes again.

We’ve taken to the streets this summer via Kick scooter. We-well, they-scoot all around this city running various errands with me and enjoying their freedom. We take the scooters on the subways, shuttles and taxi cabs… they even came with us to tour Boston (helmets required for particular adventures, of course).

It’s taken a lot of consistent daily lessons in listening to my commands, not to go too far away from me and to stop at every single driveway and street corner. They know that if they don’t listen for even a second, their privileges of riding out on the town will be stripped (it’s happened, and it was ugly).

Jack and Zoe both received a Mini Kick scooter when they were two years old. It took a bit to learn to steer and use the brake, but once they mastered the functionality they were in heaven.

Recently, Jack upgraded to the Maxi Kick Scooter-it has an adjustable t-bar and wider foot bed… and he’s positively in love. It’s like his brand new Porshe.

Needless to say, our summer has been out scootering around this city so much that I’m actually considering buying the adult version. I’m not kidding.

Until the winter time and the arrival of our new baby, we’ll be cruisin’ around the city via scooter and enjoying our summer mostly stroller free.
