The Honest Company with Jessica Alba

The birth of our third child raised a common question with us: Whether or not we would cloth diaper or stick with our trusty disposables. Both my husband and I are very eco-friendly minded and try to make many-if not all-of our consumer decisions based on their ability to be kind to the planet. We flip-flopped between the two diaper options with each child, considering all things: waste, resource depletion, cost, and of course ease. Each time we have landed with disposable through trial and error, but haven’t been completely happy with what we ended up with, all things considered. We haven’t pulled the trigger on a cloth diaper service, and the disposables we use are easy, but they aren’t eco-friendly-to our disappointment.

On Tuesday night, Beau and I attended the launch of The Honest Company, a non-toxic, eco-friendly baby products line founded by Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan that are delivered automatically with a simple monthly subscription.

The event, hosted by Nicole Feliciano of MomTrends, took place at the super swank ABC Kitchen and was attended by a small selection of New York City bloggers.

I was honored to receive an invitation, and enjoyed learning all about the product line and inspiration behind it. Jessica was candid, genuine and completely adorable. “When I became a mom, I finally became the person I am, that I always should have been,” she says. “It’s the most satisfying job in the world. But, it can also be overwhelming and confusing. I created The Honest Company to help moms and to give all children a better, safer start.”

I took the products home and immediately put them to the test. I am happy to report that of the baby products I tested, I really liked-especially the disposable diapers. They are super cute while being eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, non- toxic, chlorine-free, sustainable, and made with plant-based materials.

Once you sign up for an Honest Company account, you are instructed to add your children and build your nursery. To begin with, everyone is offered a free trial while only being charged for a minimal shipping fee-a feature that I can appreciate, because this is something you want to LOVE before signing up for a monthly delivery. Also, for a limited time they are offering Honest Wipes to be delivered for free for the length of your membership.

There are two options for orders: The Diaper Bundle, customized to your preferences for $79.95 a month (the number of diapers sent monthly depends on the size of the diaper). The Family Essentials Bundle is $35.95 and is also tailored to your needs. It comes with Shampoo & Body Wash, Face & Body Lotion, Healing Balm, Laundry Detergent and Hand Soap. After the first month, subscribers can personalize and choose from nine other Honest products in the suite.

Each of the products boasts an “Honestly Free Guarantee”, that the products will be free of the following toxins: phthalates, PVC, benzene, TEA, MEA, parabens, petroleum distillates, phosphates, chlorine, chlorinated or brominated solvents, synthetic fragrances, polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol, quaternium 15, GMOs, nanoparticles, triclosan, DMDM hydantoin, organophosphate pesticides, 1-4 dioxane, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, optical brighteners, bisphenol-A (BPA), heavy metals, alkyl phenol /nonyl phenol, formaldehyde-based preserving agents, artificial fillers, dimethicone, and more.

I’m personally looking forward to having an eco-friendly diapering option that I can count on showing up at my apartment without me having to remember to order them. I’m struggling to remember to shower and eat these days, not to mention walking to the drug store in the freezing temps for diapers is not fun (trust me). Also? The fashion forward side of me is very excited about the super cute, logo free designs. It’s about time that cute diapers came out that aren’t “designer” and high priced, don’t you think? I’m relieved to finally have an eco-friendly diapering option.

It was a treat to meet Jessica and Chris, too. They are lovely people that have honestly gotten behind their product and poured their hearts into it. Beau slept through his introduction to Jessica, which I’m pretty sure he’ll live to regret. 🙂

I was not compensated for this post. I did receive a small sample of products at the event for review purposes.

  • Love that you have already road-tested them!!! So great having you there for this launch. xoxox

  • Great review…I signed up for my sample pack earlier this week…hoping to try it on our new baby when she arrives next month. One question I have about the diapers: Do you feel like they hold in leaks just as well on a newborn as Pampers? And how many of this new diaper do you go through a day with your new little guy? Pretty close to what you were doing before with “regular” diapers?

  • I love to get the free trial packs.. But I don’t know what size they come I’n.. My son I’s I’n a 5 diaper.. He’s scared of the tolelei. It freaks him
    Out… He’s 3 I’s 3 and a half. So let me know what u can send.. Thanks

  • I have been using The Honest diapers on my son for a week now, at 15 months we use 4-5 diapers a day and he sleeps 12+ hours through the night! I am very impressed how they have held up and only a little leakage through the top and not the legs when worn 12+ hours. The best feature is the the back has a stretch band (similar to Huggies) to help hold in blowouts!

  • I am a grandmother of a two year old boy and would like these diapers for my house, but cant see any way of ordering a selected amount…I would not have him 24/7 so couldnt possibly use a full months supply every month. Is there no way to order the amount you would like each month ?

  • You are the only person I know who could stand next to Jessica Alba, even shortly post giving birth, and look just as beautiful as she does. Sigh.

  • I feel that a true environmentalist would not be “slugging” plastic diapers as they are terrible for the Earth. It is a travesty that people will sell these and market them as “healthy” and “better “, simply not true. I also feel these products are pricey and not worth it. Go online, there are far more better products with cheaper prices. She is using her fame and fortune to profit even further off of broke Americans.

DIS-HONEST Company. Don’t buy these ridiculously expensive products just because a ex-actress/pin up model sells them, that IS the scam, folks! Why support the rich to make the richer? That would be an asinine choice. I don’t buy things based on if a woman is “pretty and popular”.

Bottom line is, I spent 3 weeks online and found excellent, healthier quality products for way cheaper…do the math…duh!

    • Dear Anonymous.

If you have found such healthier, better quality products, why don’t you share with us some examples. I have read great reviews and plan on trying the product for myself to see if the reviews hold up to what is being sold, but just because she is famous doesn’t mean the product is bad or isn’t environmentally friendlier than most options on the market. Good for her for making another option available to the public that is better than the basic plastic, dyed filled products that contaminate our environment. Please give examples and explain your thought process before you just use celebrity as an excuse for a product being bad.

  • Just got my Discovery Kit trail size package, wanted to provide my own feedback on The Honest Company line of products. First of all I ordered the trial kit Sunday night and it arrived at my door Tuesday afternoon for only a $4.95 shipping fee. Very pleased with the amount of time it shipped. So far I like the products, however there is some constructive criticism.
    1) Honest Laundry Detergent: I am so amazed and excited to find a fragrance free laundry detergent that truly is fragrance free. Love this stuff already. Fair warning to those who are expecting a larger sample size, the trail kit only provides enough for one load. But hey for about $5 what do you expect. Just wished I could order more of the detergent individually. Hopefully THC comes out with options to order individual items and not a whole package.
    2) Honest Shampoo & Body Wash: This is my favorite product of the line so far. It smells soooo good!!! I wish I had a giant bottle for myself! The scent is Sweet Orange Vanilla. So good! I hope THC comes out with a line of ONLY this fragrance. Tested on myself since LO still hasn’t arrived. Hair felt soft afterwards without even using conditioner. I am very impressed with this product.
3)Honest Healing Balm: Haven’t had a chance to use however love that is has NO SCENT and is not overpowering like Desitin or other leading brands diaper cream.
    4) Honest Lotion: Very soft, not oily or greasy which is great. However packaging says fragrance free and this is very misleading. Smells like roses or fresh flowers to me. Luckily I am having a girl so I don’t mind but I would NOT use on a boy and I gurantee DH will not like this once he smells it.
    5) Honest Hand Soap: I wanted to love this product but sadly I don’t. Although I don’t necessarily hate it I guarantee I won’t be using this anytime soon. Probably just throw in my diaper bag for emergencies if somewhere doesn’t have hand soap. The smell is just too unpleasant for me personally. The scent is Organic Lemongrass. It’s not the worst scent ever but it is too much of a fresh herb garden or reminds me of cheap hand soap or potpourri from the 99 cent store. I really really wanted to like this but left my hands smelling weird and slightly dry. I hope THC works on providing a fragrance free or Orange Vanilla scent.
Overall I love Honest Companies line of products minus the hand soap. I hope to see more changes as far as the scents are concerned and I hope to see options to purchase individual items. Along with option to buy as a gift for other expectant moms such as a baby shower package would be such a great idea. And as well as a travel kit with reusable packaging that I can throw in my diaper bag. Hopefully with my feedback and if others feel the same we will see these type of changes in the near future. But to all those curious parents out there please give THC a try you won’t be disappointed.

  • I love the Honest Company. Reading their ingredient list has helped me determine what look for (and look out for!) when choosiing products the company does not supply. Jessica Alba’s ‘Honest Life’ and Christopher Gavigan’s ‘Healthy Child Healthy World’ are also great books.
