Babywearing in New York City

Living in a big city is challenging with small children. It isn’t easy to grocery shop with them, or go to the post office, or even head to ballet class once a week. Taking the subways, taxis and busses is more difficult than it’s worth, so we stay local enough to access our needs and activities without them.

The kids love to ride the bus and subway though, so when I gear up enough and plan the route, we’ll explore the city in it’s finest mode: The MTA.

IMG_3546-2

Our transportation is limited to our legs, scooters and strollers the majority of the time, so we must face the East Coast elements head on. Literally. I’ve been caught with the kids in wind, snow and rain storms more times than I’m willing to think about-those days were not fun but they will certainly stand out in my city memories.

IMG_2590

In many ways, transportation is much easier when a vehicle isn’t involved, and I certainly do NOT miss paying for gas, or the monthly car payment, or shuffling the children in and out of car seats multiple times a day. It has gotten a little trickier since our third child was born, but because he and I both love baby wearing so much, life hasn’t really changed a bit in that way. I tie him on in my beloved Moby Wrap and off we go.

I take him everywhere with me in the Moby.

Here, the Moby is paired with the Kowalli -an awesome fleece cover that fits over the baby and mama.

photo 4

In the Moby Wrap, Kowalli and even wearing a Kowalli hat!

photo 5

One of my favorite things about the Moby is it’s not bulky-I can wear many of my normal sweaters (even a blazer) over it without it looking bunched up or weird.

photo 2

photo 2-4

…And I can sit belted in the back of a taxi during the few trips I take with him in one.

photo-14

I’ve even gotten my hair blown out while wearing him. For real.

I do not know what I would do without the Moby Wrap. It is an essential in my life, and was the same when I had Zoe. It took me a few tries to get the wrapping and tying part of it down, but once I did it was absolutely worth the time. Beau and Zoe were (are) excellent sleepers in the Moby-no less than 4 hours at a stretch! That kind of time is taxing on my back, but the wrap is very supportive around the waist and I’m only a little sore after a 4 hour stretch with a 12 lb baby. The only feat I have yet to master with the Moby is figuring out how to nurse while wearing him! Any tips are greatly appreciated.

(SO many photos of me in one post! Definitely exceeds the yearly allotment.)

Brand new Lace design at Moby!

The Moby Wrap:
100% natural cotton
Ideal one-way stretch
5.5 meters in length
Machine washable
Holds babys up to 35 lbs

The Kowalli
Weather treated Polartec Fleece
Draw string adjustment
One size fits most
Fits over any carrier

The Kowalli has also been a necessity of mine this winter. I really dislike sweating, and cannot stand being overheated-which is easy to do in NYC because the weather has been so unpredictable. This cover is the perfect solution because it keeps the baby super warm while leaving my arms out and able to breathe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy Update: Due to the tremendous outpouring of love for the new Moby Lace design, the kind folks at Moby Wrap have generously offered the new design as an option for the winner!
Addressing the taxi photo: I don’t condone riding in taxis without any car seats. The laws in New York City are a little different, allowing children under 7 to ride on an adult’s lap. Regardless of the laws, we limit our taxi rides sans carseats to those times when we need it. I do not replace a car seat with a baby carrier, but I must be honest that I have and do on seldom occasion take taxis with all three children sans car seats, and it absolutely makes me uncomfortable and worried for their safety. I’m not proud of it, but it is our life and sometimes we have to use this option (mostly the rides are less than 7 minutes. Any longer than that and I opt out of the destination entirely).
Win it:
I couldn’t be happier to be hosting a giveaway for one of each: One Moby Wrap in Original or Modern, and one Kowalli in the color of the winner’s choice. (TWO winners!)
My essential travel item when traveling with children has been a dvd player and a stroller. I know, I am a bad mom with the dvd player but Elmo loves to talk and sing when I need to concentrate on driving!
travel item when I’m doing errands: (also known as shameless confession): suckers
I oftentimes bribe my kids with suckers if their good at stores.
Yes I am that mom.
And I would LOVE to have a kowalli. I already have a moby wrap, and here in central indiana, having a kowalli would be the icing on my babywearing cake.
Courtney February 28, 2012 at 10:42 pm
I would love to win the Moby wrap. I used the Ergo constantly with my first (definitely my travel must-have for the older infant phase), but didn’t really get into babywearing until he was old enough for it. I’d love to have a Moby for the newborn period – I’m due with my second in October.
traveling with children – depends on the age obviously, if it were a newborn (before walking) I would say a carrier (Moby!) so I wouldnt need a stroller! for toddlers I would have to say that most important to have is snacks- well for mine anyways, he is ALWAYS hungry!
My essential travel item when traveling with the kids is BALLOONS! They are easy to “pack” and SO much fun! Great for long waits at airports! And just throw away when you have to move on!
I would prefer the MOBY! (Although BOTH items look fantastic!) It’s been on my wishlist and I have yet to get one! We are expecting in a few months and I would LOVE to be able to carry our newborn in one! Thanks for the chance!
I’d say the most essential item when traveling with children, would be a Patemm Pad because it is so portable (folds up so nicely and neat), and you need this for diaper changes (baby and toddler) where ever you go!!!! I would totally love to win the Modern Moby Wrap!!!!! I love the lace ; )
Essential travel item? Right now, I’d have to say a bottle…which is totally uncreative, but the best way to calm down my (quick to panic) toddler. But besides food, I’d say a phone! lol It keeps her busy, and I can check anything&everything on it. Oh, and if I win….I’d loooovveee a moby! ;)
Sonja February 28, 2012 at 11:05 pm
Baby item while traveling? My Ergo. I took my daughter with me to Germany, when she was 6 weeks old and then again when she was 2. Both times, the Ergo saved my life :)
I would love to win the Moby (for my sister, due in June; I already have one) or the Kowalli – in IN it might still come in handy, even in late February!
Victoria February 28, 2012 at 11:05 pm
My can’t-live-without baby gear for travel and everyday is: the patemm pad. The best for diaper changes pretty much anywhere – and stylish patterns to boot! Super handy and practical. It’s my go-to shower gift.
A close second is the Moby wrap – I agree with everything you said in this post about city-living and the convenience of having your babe wrapped on you.
That being said, I’d love a Kowalli if it turns out to be my lucky day!
Would love to win the Moby OR Kowalli for baby #2 due in October. Only ever used a bjorn with kiddo #1 but ready to branch out. It may sound a bit ridiculous, but a go to travel item for long trips w/ a 2 year old is the Ipad. There are endless educational games and of course countless movies you can download to it. Wipes. I try to take wipes everywhere! Ever since my daughter was born 5 years ago, I’ve always kept wipes in the house too!
I would love a moby wrap. I have a 7 month old son and I’m currently 15 weeks along with my third child who’s due at the end of Aug. I’m really looking forward to being able to wear my new baby around while I continue to take care of my son and then walk to pick my daughter up from school.
Can Canadians join in too? I love my Moby. BB girl loves it when its time to do chores, the vacuum lulls her and the moving back and forth puts her to sleep. Same issue though, how to breastfeed with it on! I managed once but was quite awkward. I no longer carry a car seat around shopping, instead wrap her and shop; leave it on if putting her back in and going to another store. Right now our essential travel item is a rattle. She loves the noise and different colours. We would love another Moby. We bought a brown one because we didn’t know what we were having at the time, a girly one would be nice :)
The one item I always tl with is my “diaper pail”. My husband bought me a set of tupperwear storage containers, and I took the largest one and put about 6 diapers and 2 packs of wipes in it. I leave it in my car, and my husband has one in his car now. It makes life so much easier…. All I have to do is grab one or two diapers and one pack of wipes to throw into my purse when we go anywhere. I no longer need a diaper bag….. My son has a sippy cup that he can carry, he’s still nursing, and I already keep at least one change of clothes in my car for everyone. Having the diaper pail in the cars makes last minute trips so much easier because there’s nothing extra to pack! I’d live to have a Moby Wrap in original or modern (I really don’t know the difference, as long as it fits my plus size body) so I can finally eliminate the stroller in my car until my DS outgrows the wrap.
Our number one travel item used to be our moby, but now that my daughter is 3 its her leap pad!! And my camera!!
Jill February 28, 2012 at 11:32 pm
Definitely a moby for the essential travel item. Perfect for planes do my arms don’t get tired holding the baby JUST SO and not moving when he falls asleep!
We do most traveling by car and trips are usually around an hour and a half. Our essential item for our 5 year old is the dvd player.
Laura February 28, 2012 at 11:34 pm
I would love a new moby as I leant mine to a friend with a fussy baby and that was the end of that. I’m expecting again and loved our moby on the last round.
I cannot travel with out a baby wearing carrier of some sort. the ergo has been great with a two year old.
Stephanie Hanes February 28, 2012 at 11:41 pm
I always try to stock some healthy snack items in the car for all our road trips we take in the summer. Last summer my Ergo was a must have travel item with my son, but, now that he’s 2, I’ll be bringing along a child harness so he can’t run too far from me. ;) While I LOOOOOVE this new Moby design, I would really love a Kowalli to keep me warm while babywearing #3 due in October. :)
Maria February 29, 2012 at 12:12 am
For me, the essential travel item has been a carrier. I was able to carry my then 5 month old through a busy airport with ease. My issue has been finding a carrier I could use long term (I had big babies, so the weight limit was an issue).
I’d love to win the Moby! :)
Katie Smith February 29, 2012 at 12:13 am
We don’t leave home without our “snack bag” I keep mini water bottles, home made trail mix, fruit snacks etc in it. My 3 year old is hungry the minute I start driving. I also have a 3 month old and I only need diapers since I am nursing :) But I would LOVE a moby wrap to use with her so I don’t need the stroller!!!
My essential travel item really a combo of two items, the Moby and the diaper bag. It’s not a traditional purse style, it’s a backpack. I wear my daughter in the Moby, put the backpack on, and I’m ready to face the day, hands-free! I truly could not live without my Moby. I would love a second one, to alternate or use if the other is with my husband or in the wash. I’ve had to make do without it a couple times, and let me tell you, it was miserable! Folding strollers while straddling babies on hip, or carrying a 23-pound baby in my arms. Moby= best baby product ever.
Our favorite travel tool is an iPod touch with an Otter Box protective case. My son was given one as a hand-me-down gift when he was 2 years old (I know seems crazy) but it has been a fantastic learning & entertainment tool! The. case keeps the iPod safe for a toddler’s energy and the abundance of free or 99 cent aps is wonderful! He can read stories, do puzzles, work on shapes, colors, etc. even watch videos… It is a wonderful tool & we never leave home without it!
Only “issue” is that we will probably need to find another one for when our daughter is old enough to use one, doubt our son will “grow out” of this specific “toy” :-)
I would love a Kowalli. I just got a Moby Wrap a couple weeks ago & my daughter and I love it! Living in central Illinois a Kowalli would be a great addition due to our weather being so wild! Thanks for the opportunity!!
We have 8 children, so traveling is always well organized and planned out! I would love a Kowalli to wear over my carriers. With 3 4 and under baby wearing is a must for me.
Essential travel item? My iPad, of course!
Shawna February 29, 2012 at 3:08 pm
My travel essential would be a DVD player. We travel a lot, and to get to the mall or target. Or my pediatricians office it is an hour drive one way. The DVD player has saved us. I would love a moby wrap. I have twins and one of them loves to be held.
Tian Hapsari February 29, 2012 at 3:41 pm
My essential travel item is stroller. I would love to win Kowalli, :)
Amber Morgan February 29, 2012 at 3:49 pm
It is essential to have a pacifier. Going on a “long stretch” of carrying the baby in a Moby can be somewhat uncomfortable but my little one will usually fall asleep if he has a bottle or his favorite pacifier!
Kristy February 29, 2012 at 4:10 pm
My essential travel item with a newborn is definetely the Moby & with a toddler, snacks! I had a Moby with my 1st child, who is now 3, & it LOVED it, was used on a daily basis…I knew someone that had a premie & really needed a Moby, but couldn’t afford 1, so I lent them my Moby & it was never returned..Now I am expecting my 2nd child in Sept & I am needing a new Moby, since mine was never returned. I absolutely LOVE the new modern Lace Moby!!! Thanks sooo much for this opportunity to win such an awesome prize!! Moby is the best & most essential travel item ever!!
I have been friends with Moby Wrap on facebook for years, that’s how I found out about this awesome giveaway!!!
Tara C February 29, 2012 at 4:53 pm
My essential travel item (besides my trusty baby carrier) is a big cotton scarf. I can wear it to look stylish, and it doubles as a baby blanket, nursing cover, change pad, etc etc…much cooler than bringing a bunch of receiving blankets in your carry-on :)
Thanks for the chance and I would LOVE to with The Kowalli
Liz Santos February 29, 2012 at 5:18 pm
Most essential Travel Item on a trip is to bring something for my 3 yr old to be in charge of. When we fly on a plane I pack a mini suitcase that he can handle. It keeps him focused and keeps Mom and Dad calm because he’s not running all over the place!!!
I’d love to win a Moby Wrap!!
Christine February 29, 2012 at 5:18 pm
My little one hasn’t arrived yet but I’m hoping a Moby wrap might be my essential travel item ;) So of course I’d choose the wrap if I win.
Jennifer Lucero February 29, 2012 at 5:21 pm
My “essential travel item” isn’t a tangible item … it is PATIENCE! I’ve got a very energetic four year old, and a seven week old baby. We’re still adjusting to our “new norm” and that is requiring a lot of patience from Mommy! :) I bought a black MOBY, the only option at Target. Still trying to figure out how to use it so that we’re both comfortable. I’d LOVE to win the lace MOBY. I live in the Phoenix area and very soon, it’ll be too hot to wear the black MOBY … or maybe any MOBY at all … LOL!
Tiara Draisey March 3, 2012 at 5:21 pm
With baby 5 my moby will help me conquer the world….well maybe not the world, but my house! And that is definitely got to be the beginning to conquering the world, right? Outings are much easier with hands free vs lugging around the retched infant carrier. I can’t carry a purse, a diapey bag, an infant carrier, and hold a 3 & 4 year olds hands at the same time! The moby turns you from being a super mom to a super duper, extra multi-taskin, free handin, less stressed Momma! Oh, and Daddy of course ;)
I don’t really have an essential travel item yet because my first child was born almost a month ago and I haven’t really traveled much with him yet. However, I would love to get a Moby, and though I haven’t tried one yet, I am pretty sure that the Moby will quickly become my favorite item in taking my little one out and about. :) If I won, I would choose the lace Moby!
My essential travel-with-kids item is definitely a baby carrier! I feel like I can do anything when my baby is close and secure :) My prize of choice would be a Kowalli, but would love to have a Moby in the new lace print, as well- wouldn’t be disappointed with either!
My husband and I are planning our first trip with our 2 month old in April. We travelled a ton before we had him and one of our essential items has always been a Thermarest travel pillow. I actually just got a Sleepy Wrap at a consignment store .It’s been a little too cold to take my son out in it so I would love a Kowalli!
My favorite photo was the one of you with your head in the sink while wearing the baby! This epitome of multi-tasking, I say!
My essential travel item for my three (ages 4, 2.5, and 6 months) would probably be their ipods. They help out during car rides, bedtimes in an unfamiliar place, wait times, etc. I wear Cash (my youngest) often so that I have a free hand for the other two. He likes being so close and I like having him there. I’d love to win the original moby since I’ve never tried it.
I so enjoy your blog.
I couldn’t travel without our moby!!! Living in the city=LOTS of baby wearing for me! I have a moby so if I won another I would pay it forward to someone who needs it. But…..I would LOVE to win the cover for my little guy! :)
Currently my essential traveling item with my daughter is a water bottle, snacks, and tissues. She is always hungry or thirsty, and tissues be ause you never know when a public toilet will be out of toilet paper!! I’d LOVE to win the Moby!! I used a sling with my daughter, but have been thinking a Moby will be more back supportive for our baby due in September!
Jennifer Hesterman March 5, 2012 at 7:35 pm
My most essential travel item for my daughter is obviosuly her carseat, but also snacks! I would love to win a solid Moby. Thanks!
Katie March 6, 2012 at 8:32 pm
My essential travel items are my Moby wrap and his Wubbanub paci. I also like Moby on facebook. I would love the lace Moby wrap, it is pretty but still not too girly to carry my son in :)
Sherri March 6, 2012 at 11:24 pm
My current essential travel item when travelling with my son is his Monkey. He is our little monkey so we don’t leave home without his monkey!! We also make sure we always have a blanket to cover him in his car seat when it’s cold or rainy out…this is why the Kowalli would be perfect. I could carry my little monkey when it’s cold out and not worry!!!
<3 My new Moby lavender tulip wrap!!! I love checking out all the different patterns and being able to encoporate Miss Madelyn into my attire!!
Lesley March 8, 2012 at 1:11 pm
I love my Baby Bjorn for traveling and would love a Kowalli to keep my little guy warm!
Susan March 8, 2012 at 1:55 pm
My must have item is “mimi”, her binky. It’s one of the smoothie binkies that has an animal attached to it. She cannot give it up. She just turned two, so I’m not ready to push her just yet.
I am due at the end of April with our sequel – would love to try the Moby wrap when the baby arrives!
Mer March 8, 2012 at 3:31 pm
My favorite thing to travel with is a role of blue painter’s tape. ENDLESS hours of ripping and sticking fun on a plane, or in the car. I’d love a Moby Wrap to use with my 2nd little one so I can still be pretty mobile with my 1st. Thanks!
Those pics are precious. I hesitate to “like” the baby carriers on FB since I have yet to announce that I have a 3rd child coming in 6 months but yes, I do like them! In fact, I love them!
I follow you on twitter & have “loved” your FB page since I’ve been a subscriber. With this 3rd surprise entering this crazy family, I have been quite interested in your opinions on baby gear. Thanks for the great posts!
My essential travel item (other than diapers and is my nursing cover! I would love to win either item! I think the Kowalli wrap would be awesome for the cold Canadian Winters though!
