Building an Allergen Free Space at Home (Giveaway)

When we learned about Jack’s asthma and seasonal allergies a couple of years ago, our lives truly turned inside out. Being that it’s such a temperamental disease, taking the necessary precautions was the only way to rule out irritants. We knew that the pollen in the New York City area is notoriously very high, so changing our routine in various ways was a critical component to at least attempt to curb his attacks.

I’m not overly comfortable medicating at the drop of a hat, but obviously I’ll do whatever I need to keep Jack’s asthma at bay. The daily albuteral (steroid) treatments tend to make him super edgy and wired, and it is so bothersome to watch him in such discomfort even though it’s for his own good. As a part of my contribution to the #RoomToBreathe campaign, and in an attempt to combat the amount of toxins in his environment and system, we’ve installed the Sharp Air Purifier and have reduced the amount of toxic cleaning products drastically.

I personally love this unit-it feels like a “good robot” of sorts-and the aesthetically inclined side of me really appreciates the fact that it’s sleek without feeling too sterile. This purifier offers almost perfect allergen removal: True HEPA filtration removes 99.97% of airborne pollutants including dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke particles.

Creating this type of clean, zen-like space for him to be home in was much easier than we had originally thought. We flocked to resources like The Naturally Clean Home: 150 Super-Easy Herbal Formulas for Green Cleaning – easy and inexpensive, non-toxic alternative cleaning solutions for your home, and Asthma & Allergies: Recipes & Advice to Control Symptoms: Food Solutions – a comprehensive guide to food solutions with recipes for asthma and allergy sufferers, as well as Jessica Alba’s The Honest Life-every day solutions for incorporating a greener lifestyle.

We’re big fans of Honest products-we use nearly the entire line of baby care and household cleaners. The decision to make the changes in our lifestyle was probably the most drastic part of all of this-incorporating each new thing was easy and simply felt better to all of us.

We’ve also started washing their stuffed animals on a regular basis. We saw the Teddy Needs a Bath washing bag on the Shark Tank a while back and immediately knew we needed one. We knew that getting rid of their beloved stuffed animals was going to be a heart-breaking challenge, this washing bag helps to rid them of dust mites. Win/win!

Jack’s asthma is still recurring, though it’s so much less during the normally difficult times like spring and fall-when the seasons change. I definitely attribute that to the use of the Sharp Air Purifier and toxin-free products.

  • Living in Las Vegas we suffer from extremely dry and dusty air. My 4 year old suffers from nosebleeds at least 3 times a week and that is with a humidifier on every night. I do my best to keep our home clean but could really use the type of help that I know the Sharp PCI Air Purification System would provide. Thank you so much! @mommy_monika

  • my 4 year old suffers from asthma as well. so not fun. we’ve done a lot in our home to help him ( natural products, a huge fan of Honest, and we have a purifier for his room), but we could REALLY use this unit for my in-laws house. they watch the kids during the day while we are working and unfortunately are both smokers (never in the house when the kids are there, but still…..). Having something like this unit for my in-laws would make SUCH A DIFFERENCE for my little guy.

I am not a fan of the albuterol either. I hate seeing him all hyper and crazy like that πŸ™

  • Hi Jessica,

Love your blog! I really, really want to win this air purifier. I’ve got severe seasonal allergies that require steroids and all kinds of medications. This would really help in the house! @beyondbrochure

  • Oh this is great! I recently purchased an air purifier for my apartment (one of the bedroom) and now looking to get one for the living room. Would love to win one of these! I’ve been trying to do more ‘clean/pure’ living since being diagnosed with melanoma. twitter @erinmay0731!

  • My twin boys have intermittent asthma. No one in our house sleeps when they’re sick because they’re both up coughing, gagging and wheezing all night. Would love one of these bad boys to keep in their room. (I’m @lovelyjoyblog)

  • I’d love to create a healthier home with this air purifier.

  • My husband has pretty bad allergies, and I’d also love to have this before our first baby arrives in Aug. (I guess it could be a white noise machine for him.) πŸ™‚

  • Not sure when this ends but I have 2 kids with asthma and would love this

  • My daughter was just diagnosed with Asthma, 3 years of dr’s visit and prancing around actually saying “ASTHMA”. She’s a 3rd generation of females with it. It’s been a rough 3 years but it’s so “nice” to hear them pinpoint it. She’s on a nebulizer so far no just in case pump but that could change. They poor girl is a MESS with all the pollen and allergens we are dealing with up here in MA. This would be such a blessing to my daughter and I (newly single-mom of two little ladies).
