Mommas on the Runway at Fashion Week

Last week, one of my favorite New York Fashion Week events held their third annual show featuring none other than mothers. Strut, The Fashionable Mom Show, took place on Saturday, and is not only managed by mothers Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein, but the models are women and mothers of all shapes, ages, and sizes.

I was fortunate enough to attend the very first Strut show a few years ago, and this year my dear friend and Momma’s Gone City NYC contributor Natalie Stanton attended on my behalf. Some of the moms who walked in the show included Corrine Ingrassia, who is pregnant with her third baby, Melissa Chapman, and even Amber Sabathia and her children.

There’s something about seeing dear friends of mine dress up and walk confidently and radiantly down the runway during New York Fashion Week that makes me actually tear up. I love the way this show celebrates women, especially mothers who get to spend the day being dolled up and truly making history during one of the most famous fashion events in the world.

The show this year cast a handful of women who all chose a charity close to their heart to walk in support of. 10 year old super-dj Fulano spun a lively soundtrack, while he watched his mother, Latham Thomas, walk vibrantly down the runway during one of my favorite moments. CC Sabathia (pitcher for the New York Yankees), Amar’e Stoudemire (New York Knicks) watched their wives and children prance down the white runway next to Melissa Joan Hart, mother of three.

Back stage the women sat at mirrors while their hair was coiffed and their dresses steamed, but a new procedure was also added to the mix: Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer, which is a spray lotion that moisturizes deeply and absorbs instantly so there’s no waiting around for the lotion to absorb before getting dressed. Natalie tried it out herself and could attest to the softness the spray brought. As a mother of three myself, on the rare occasion that I do get a shower in, I certainly don’t have time to wait before getting dressed. I generally skip the lotion process all together in favor of chasing my almost two year old around. I almost always regret it though, as my skin definitely craves moisture the older I get.

The moisturization was evident on the skin of the women strutting down the runway, and I know that they most certainly did not have the time to wait amongst the chaos that was backstage. It’s always such an inspiration to me to see my friends doing something that they might not be used to doing and stepping out of their comfort zones. As a women myself, though, there is an extra kick that comes with knowing that you look good both on the outside and the inside. The confidence and beauty was palpable on that runway though, and I am so proud of them.
