Holiday Surprises for our Fur Babies
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I’d baby my dolls and eventually hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and dogs and learned how to care for little beings with all of my heart. Early on in my courtship with Justin, one of the things that I fell in love with instantly about him was watching him with his younger nieces and nephews. We both wanted children, though we never really made plans for how many. Both of us came from families with two children, so our experience raising four is somewhat of a new concept to both of us, as well as learning about the dynamics and logistics of having a large family. It’s complicated and chaotic and wonderful in just about every way, and certainly not limited to just our human children.
One of the great things about having a big family is we are pretty much celebrating something all year round. Our six birthdays on top of traditional holidays as well as our dear pets, Charlie and Theo, whose birthdays and milestones we celebrate as well. There’s something to be planning for and getting excited about nearly every month of the year, and that not only keeps us pretty busy, but as the mom and primary shopper/planner in the family, my calendar alerts are frequent and furious. I rely on certain retailers and small shops for getting the necessary decorations, gifts, surprises, supplies and of course, goodies for our pets. With Christmas rapidly flying around the corner, I’m pretty proud of myself for the stashes of little surprises that I’ve put aside, gathering little odds and ends and saving myself extra trips around town that are almost always inevitable, anyway.
Our mantle seems to expand a little each year, and feels like it’s maxing full capacity with eight stockings hanging from its large beam. Come Christmas morning, the kids beeline for their stockings, making sure to pull down Theo and Charlie’s for them first. It’s incredibly special watching the way they love and get excited for these small surprises for each other and their pets before their own gifts. To me, that is the most glorious part of the entire holiday and my greatest gift; as much as they enjoy the magic and surprises, they are so acutely aware of each and every one of our experiences. This year as in years past, I stashed a box full of Greenies Dental Chews for filling Theo and Charlie’s stockings along with a toy or two. Charlie is especially keen on Temptations and Greenies, and Theo is always happy with a new ball and some extra Greenies treats. I am always so cognizant and deliberate about the sweets and treats that go into all of their stockings, especially being in a family with a dentist who cares deeply about the dental health of our entire family. GREENIES™ Dental Chews are the No. 1 vet-recommended* chews and treats and are an easy way to keep up our pet’s dental hygiene, as they help to maintain healthier teeth and gums and control plaque and tartar buildup. They are safe & easy to digest, made of high-quality ingredients that break down quickly. It’s not an easy feat finding a product that covers this many bases, so we are all happy to have a solution that both Theo and Charlie enjoy and it makes our jobs a little easier.
Christmas morning will be our first here in this new (to us) home. It’s always part of the magic for Justin and I, setting the stage for what will hopefully be a really peaceful, loving and thoughtful experience for all of us. I am so eager to watch my children pull their stockings down and help each other, as well as Theo and Charlie, unravel the surprises that each contain. There will be a few sweets and treats involved, and I’m happy to have made conscientious choices for each and every one of them, knowing the helpful benefits that come with our pet’s gifts from Santa. Now if I could find a product for my human children that did the same!
