Exploring The Ups and Downs of Potty Training

With three successfully toilet-trained children, I will admit reluctantly that I’ve walked into this season with Evvie feeling slightly cocky. As a mother of five children, I can safely say that the only thing that is consistent about having children is inconsistency. They will each do things completely differently from the next, and literally nothing can be expected. So, why I thought that a complex stage like potty training would be remotely predictable is beyond me. I am still learning as a parent, and a person.

My boys tend to be generally motivated by things; Toys, candy, privileges, etc. Jack was enticed to try the toilet by (finally) chocolate, and Beau was very similar. My daughters are more intrigued and motivated by the independence and status of being “Big Kids,” and want to do the big girl thing much earlier than their brothers. When we knew it was #Time2Potty with Evvie, I wanted to make sure it was fun for her and not a daunting, exhausting process. So, I did some research and found tons of tips and advice on making potty training fun along with exciting offerings from Pull-Ups that make it easier to start. In fact, 3 out of 4 moms prefer the Pull-Ups offering* and I can say that I’m definitely one of those moms. With in-pack prizes and activities, Pull-Ups made it easy to get Evvie excited to start. We have been using the Pull-Ups Cool & Learn Training Pants with Evvie, and it helps that they provide a brief cooling sensation that mimics the feel of real underwear that helps to remind her to use the real toilet. That alone has been a determining factor in her journey through potty training, as she really does not want to feel wet and has become a great reminder and learning tool.

Though it’s been an easier journey with Evvie than it was with my boys, there have still been days with more success and others with more regression. She doesn’t like to interrupt her day or fun activity to head to the bathroom, and often times we are in and out of the car so often that it becomes a distraction and inconvenience for her to remember to tell us that she needs to go to the bathroom. This is, in particular, is where her come in handy as they have an award-winning design specifically to help teach potty training skills by looking and feeling more like underwear, so she feels like she is more in control of her situation. No matter where she is, she can make the decision to let us know she needs to use the potty rather than waiting for us to help her.

In the end, even though they’ve all met each milestone at different stages and at their own pace, I’m encouraged that Evvie’s key to success is her motivation for independence, and her desire to have FUN. We have the right tools from Pull-Ups.com to make potty training excited for her and even fun characters printed on her Pull-Ups to entice her. I personally was so excited to donate all of her leftover diapers to symbolize the start of her journey.
