First of all, welcome to NYC and good luck with Nursery School. Having put three kids through the NS process, I can tell you that most of what you hear about the process is urban myth. I don't know of a single school that puts you on a wait list prior to accepting an application which you can't do until the year before your child enters. Schools are expensive, no doubt, like so much else in the city. Our NS school actually costs less/year than the school my nieces and nephews attend in Dallas.They are competitive, not because most have a "criteria" for the kids, but because there are so many applicants and schools don't want to bring in crazy parents who will make everyone's lives impossible. My husband was still in school when we were looking to get our first in NS. I bought THE BOOK, scanned it for the cheapest school downtown which happened to be a co-op that we liked when we visited. We agreed we would have to sit out until the 3s if we didn't get in anywhere. Happily we got in and were able to get all three kids into an "affordable" NS program. The older ones now attend public school in tribeca--and we could not be happier with those options. There is always a lot of fretting around the NS application time, but frankly I have not known a family to not get in somewhere.

I love looking at all your pics on your blog - your children are so sweet. And I can absolutely understand that feeling of "being trapped" indoors when you have little people. It's mighty depressing - although as long as they are having fun, they really don't care. The lovely adaptability of children is just awesome

I feel ya! Been living in Michigan for almost 37 years and the snow is starting to get on my last nerve. It has snowed every single day this week. Every single stinkin' day! Looks like you're making the most of it. Every year it starts to get a little old toward mid-Feb. But it just makes Spring that much sweeter when it gets here!

MONUMENTAL! My Macs are not quite 20 months apart. When both were potty trained, let me sleep late, and could get a breakfast bar on their own in the AM until I woke up, IT WAS A BLESSED MIRACLE. Now my Macs pee, poop, get dressed, make snacks, get ready for school...and have grown into VERY independent TWEENS all on their own. It is liberating, but I do miss the time I got to hold them when helping them. Congrats and one day at a time.

i feel you - I keep looking out at our big new backyard and wishing we oculd go play in it - but the three feet of packed icy snow still sitting out there are kind of a deterrent.

btw, I WORSHIP that first picture! I want to hang it on my wall, but that would be weird since it's not my kid. I'm going to be dressing them up trying to recreate it for months, haha!

Thanks for the empathy, ladies. I know I have it slightly better than many people on this side of the continent (um, snow in TX? That's crazy!). It's just kind of tiring!! And all of the beautiful spring clothes that all of the stores have now are murdering me. JCrew?? Can't WAIT! I'm pretty sure I'll appreciate Spring in a whole new way this year :)

I have a bad case of the winters, too, and I live in Canada, where we get NYC winers but WORSE from like, November until March. It's brutal. I can't handle it! I'm not a fan of winter, I don't love the snow or the ice or the cold or the driving conditions and I especially don't like dressing my children up to go outside. Coats, hats, scarves, boots... soooo annoying! Every. Single. Day. Sigh. And even though we, too, are going stir crazy from being indoors most of the day, and even though I get angry when baby D takes off his clothes and diaper yet again and then takes the couch apart to jump on it, I think it's cute, and like you said, these moments, we'll cherish forever. Spring is also around the corner, right?

okay, i feel WAY guilty now. It snowed for part of one day and I about had a fit. Texas is so mild in the winter and I complain about 40 degree weather. But we do get the grey skies too. Ugggggghhhh. Give me the hot, sunny Texas weather any day. If I were in NYC in winter I might have to woop up on someone. ;) Hang in there.

that's so awesome! I think Izzy had a similar moment when she was totally ready at about 18mo, but it coincided with the exact week i gave birth to Jack so we couldn't run with it nd she didn't end up potty trained until 2. And now we are here with Jack at age 2.5 and I haven't even thought of getting him started on PT because he is so far from ready. Strange how different they all are. Good luck that this continues, and sorry that your baby is all grown up!
